Where Social Media And SEO Walk Hand In Hand

There is one trend that many SEO professionals rue and that is the explosion of blogs. However, the explosion of blogs has also led to an explosion in social media outlets and the two can walk hand in hand – in fact, they must.

One reason that SEO professionals dislike blogs is due to the lack of linking. Several years ago you could write a good article, or if you did have a blog, a good post; and others would take it up, add to it, put their own views to it; and link to it. These days, if your lucky, someone will comment. They are just as likely to either ignore it or pick up the theme and write their version claiming credit for being the first to discuss it. A link back or reference to you? Forget it.

For this reason, getting links back to a page is becoming harder as each day passes. In fact, I can see the day when links become only a minor part of the search engine rank algorithm. Other factors will soon supersede pure links and one of those factors will undoubtedly be social media.

Matt Cutts and Google have another video available where Matt talks about social media and the way Google treats those links. On the one hand Matt claims that Google treats them as plain links. He then goes on to say that when it come to social media links, they “probably have changed the way social sites are weighted”.

You can draw your own conclusions on this point until Google provides more clarification. However, it would be reasonable to assume that more often a site is mentioned, whether in conversation or through bookmarks, the more authority that page will earn.

Social media will play a larger role in SEO in future, however, as with inbound links, it will still only be a part of the overall SEO picture. However, if you have an opportunity to participate in social media then run with it – you just never know how important today’s actions could be in your sites future rankings.
