Control Internal Links To Ensure Your Best Page Ranks
I wonder how many web site owners realize that, in general terms, you can only rank one page for each keyword you optimize. If you are trying to get three or four pages to rank for identical keywords, forget it.
There are pluses and minuses to this of course. One plus is that a rival cannot dominate the search results by having all ten of the results listed on page one. The minuses, which of your pages do you want to have listed.
This is where strong on page optimization and the judicious use of internal links can be important. You could, for instance, ensure that all related articles link back to the page you want ranked . It would also be helpful if that page didn’t link back. This provides a one way flow of ‘link juice’ all headed to your ranked page.
If you take the approach that you have a primary page which is the page you want ranked and that other pages (on the same topic) are there to play a supporting role – not to become the main page themselves.
When linking to that central page, anchor text is particularly important – be sure to use anchor text that promotes the keywords you are trying to rank for. Internal linking is an important part of SEO particularly when used to promote one page over another.
