Is Guy A Kawasaki A Twitter Spammer?
Guy Kawasaki gave a keynote address on Twitter as a marketing tool at Search Engine Strategies in New York. Interestingly, as he was giving his speech there were a few members of the audience who blogged about it. They weren’t very happy.
After SES, several U.S. SEOs and online marketers began calling him a spammer and discussions got a bit heated. Kawasaki has defended his tactics on Twitter, which include using ghost tweeters and self promoting his own web properties. But does that equate to spam?
I’m of the opinion that it isn’t spam. To me, spam is something you can’t control. It arrives in your e-mail inbox, like it or not. But with Twitter you do have some level of control. You can opt out of a Twitter stream if you don’t like what someone is doing. If you don’t like the messages they send, just stop reading them or opt out of their Twitter stream.
For marketers, the lesson to learn here is that your subscribers, on Twitter and e-mail, have power. If you annoy them they will leave. So put some thought into how you use your tools.
