When Web Design And SEO Clash – It’s Time For A Change
SEO seems to have become the most important game in town to the extent that elements on web sites get ignored. Some take the attitude that true SEO incorporates every aspect of a web site including web design.
The reality is probably nearer the opposite, true web site management takes into account every aspect which includes SEO, social marketing and web design. There should never be a clash with one being sacrificed for another – if this happens, it’s time for a change.
When I say it’s time for a change I refer to your designer and/or SEO advisor. Web design is not just about look. It is also about ease of use for the visitor and how quickly you can finalize an action once decision has been made. For example, if visitors decides to buy, you need a process that is smooth and fast with fewest number of steps possible. Every step has the potential for the buyer to escape and for the sale to be lost – the fewer the steps, the less likely you are to lose a sale.
Can SEO work within these processes? Yes – and it must. Does web design need to be sacrificed for the sake of SEO? No! Whilst the two have opposite intentions, one (SEO) is used to attract and deliver customers (through the search engines), the second (web design) is intended to make their experience a positive one and to convert them to sales.
Search engines are not the only source of traffic so for many sites, offline and online marketing, social marketing and general advertising are just as important as SEO. Don’t sacrifice web design for SEO or any other component. SEO may bring in thousands of visitors, but a poor design will see them disappear quickly. In reality, your SEO can still bring in those visitors and a good web design will convert them in higher numbers.
