A Poor Server Can Kill Even The Best In SEO
SEO has two aims – to rank highly in the search engines results and to deliver traffic. However, there is one area of SEO that is often forgotten about and that is that ‘you must have a website to deliver that traffic to’.
I know – it is pretty obvious. However, if you have a poor server that has a lot of downtime and/or is very slow then the chances are that to many potential visitors, search engine robots includes, your web site simply doesn’t exist – if it doesn’t exist, it cannot be ranked.
That is a pretty simplistic view of the situation and over time your web site and its pages will get ranked. However, if it is unreliable and keeps producing ‘not found’ errors then it will not rank as highly as it could despite the very best in SEO.
The longer term problem with a poor server is not restricted to loss of rank in search results. Those that do find your site and try to visit are potential customers. If your site is down, or worse still, goes down while they are visiting, then you will lose that customer. No customers – no income.
If you have server issues there is really only one solution – change servers. If you have shared hosting then consider either VPS (virtual private server) or going all the way and using a private or dedicated server. With a reliable host you should be aiming for 99% up-time.
The best SEO program in the world cannot be expected to do its job if there are no pages to work on. A good server will ensure your pages are always available to both the search engine spiders and your customers so the SEO program you have in place can be effective.
