Blogging: Do Your Post Titles Make The Grade?
One of the hardest tasks when blogging is coming up with a good post title for every single post. If you post daily, or more often, it can really stretch the gray matter to come up with something fresh. It is not just fresh that matters – you need to think carefully about your audience and to generate a title that your audience will find attractive.
So who is your audience? This is where many bloggers come unstuck. They either write what they think is a good title; write a title to a specific group of people; or write a title designed to appeal to the search engines. The reason blog post titles can be so difficult is because you have to appeal to everyone – the search engine, your regular reader and new readers.
Believe it not, search engines are easy! Include a keyword or keyword phrase at the very start of your title and then sprinkle that keyword (or key phrase) where appropriate in the post. Forget having a particular ratio of keywords – just ensure it is at the start of your title and the search engines will do the rest.
Writing your title for your readers is not so easy. They are not a computer and need a little more in the way of stimulation. Your title should also be accurate – it shouldn’t promise one thing while the post itself delivers something different.
If your stuck for a post title, start with your keyword or key phrase then go on to write your post. You will surprised how often a title will come to mind as your write. If one doesn’t, read through the post and find a line that nails the posts message. Rewrite that into your title using your keywords.
Post titles are important. Readers rely on them to determine whether or not the post is going to be worth reading. Search engines rely on them to determine what the post is all about – particularly important when it is indexed and returned in search results. With a little though, post titles are not that difficult. If you can get it right, your blogging will be a whole lot easier.
