Is SEO Still The Main Game In Town?

When most people think traffic they think SEO and when they think SEO they automatically think keywords and links. If you are looking at a basic SEO strategy then they can certainly be starting points, however, even for basic SEO, they won’t suffice.

When it comes to traffic generation, SEO is probably a misnomer in today’s world. If you are starting a new site then SEO should not be your first concern. Your first question has to be – ‘why am I creating this site?’ and ‘what am I trying to achieve?’. Your site should then be planned to answer those two questions. Once you have a general outline for your site, then you can start to look at the SEO components – but don’t stop there.

As I said, SEO in its traditional format is a now a misnomer. What you are looking at is a complete site optimization strategy that targets all areas of today’s online community. You will need to target search engines for the free traffic that is available; social sites for similar reasons along with the branding and marketing opportunities that exist; perhaps local directories and local search if appropriate; and of course, your visitors and potential customers.

This process is still being referred to as SEO although other terms have crept in to muddy the water in recent years. You may hear terms such as ’search engine marketing’, ’social optimization’ and ‘social marketing‘. Put together they equate to web site optimization – preparing your site for all aspects of the internet.

Targeting search engines alone for traffic could see you being left behind as your competition incorporates other services that are now available. Don’t think of SEO as the only source of traffic for your site. Take on a holistic approach and you may be surprised at the results.
