Web Design Is Not Just The Pretty Face We See – It Includes Site Architecture Too

For most people, web design is the design of the pages that everyone gets to see. However, your site’s web design goes far beyond just the pretty picture that visitors see. Your site’s architecture is also a part of that design. Why? As your designer is building your site, she will need to store information and create internal links. If she gets this part wrong, it can create a situation where your whole SEO program could become worthless.

Web designers and programmers in general like to do things their way. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always make for good SEO. Your site’s directories and file names are a good example. I don’t know how many times I have seen graphics stored in a ‘graphics’, ‘pictures’ or ‘images’ directory with the graphics stored using some mysterious code that I am sure web designers employ. For example, rather than using a keyworded file name, you will see something like 12334.jpg.

The same can be said for other directories where the web designer has used shorthand or abbreviations. I heard one designer say it saved time. This may be true, but when the site’s SEO kicks in, most of these directories and file names need changing to much friendlier names. The repercussion is that every page has to be searched for any uses of the old file name and/or directory and altered to the SEO friendly titles – it doesn’t save time now.

A simple solution is to get the web designer to work with the SEO consultant. With luck, they will deliver a web site that not only looks great, but has great architecture as well.
