Do You Need A New SEO Strategy To Rank In Bing

All the hype and talk about Microsoft’s latest search engine is finally starting to wane. For many web site owners, the question now is what SEO strategies will help them rank highly in Bing’s search results. It really is early days yet but there are few points that are already worth looking at.

The first thing that stands out is that you can rank highly for more than one page in Bing’s results. After doing a few tests for long tail search phrases, I have noticed several sites ranking on the front page with more than one page for that search query. In fact the results from one query had one site with five individual pages listed – the other five results where for two other sites – in reality, three sites took all ten spots on the search results front page.

If this continues then it may well have huge implications for SEO. I accept that Google is the king when it comes to search, but Bing is acting like a prince trying to charm the pants off everyone before taking over. The point I make here is that although Google is number one for search, there is a whole lot of traffic that can be won through Bing and Yahoo. If you can dominate the front page of search results for a search term, your chances of winning that click will be far higher.

The second point to note with Bing’s search results is the extra information provided for each page listed. In the form of an opening mini window, an extract from the page together with relevant internal links are displayed. I am not sure how much this will benefit the searcher but I am sure that over time it will become an area worth looking at from a marketing perspective.

How do you rank well in Bing’s search results? Fortunately, when it comes to SEO, there is no apparent change to the current situation. Quality content that is optimized with the right keywords supported by relevant inbound links. I have seen one report that suggests that links from pages that themselves have a lot of inbound links are favoured by Bing. This may need further research to confirm.

What is interesting is that the more pages that have strong SEO programs applied the better your chances of having multiple pages returned in Bing’s search results. How users will react when a search term only displays ten variations of the same page will be interesting. Will Bing have to cut back on how many pages a site can rank for, a la Google? Time will tell. For now, it’s business as usual when it comes to Bing and SEO.
