If you are an avid reader of SEO blogs then you may feel that link building is the heart and soul of SEO. Whilst links are an important part of SEO, they are just that – a part of the overall picture. There are some that are so caught up in link building they forget this.

If you are caught up in the link building craze then perhaps it is time to take a step back – consider the basics of link building and then consider your overall SEO strategies. Here are some basic link building strategies that are not difficult to undertake, don’t take up too much, yet deliver a steady stream of links.

  • List your site in directories – choose well known directories that are free, have good rankings and high traffic numbers
  • Post to forums – spend some time on forums developing an authority whilst building links from within the forum.
  • Comment on blogs – build on your authority by adding to the conversation on well ranked blogs.
  • Guest post on blogs – become a guest writer and submit your articles for publication on niche related blogs.
  • Press releases – publish periodical press releases
  • Social media – Create profile pages in prominent social media networks.
  • Ask for a link – find relevant sites and ask for links

Implement link building strategies based on those basic principles and you should find yourself with more time to concentrate on other important SEO areas such as the creation of content, keyword research and search engine marketing. Link building isn’t hard if you start with the basics.
