Is Your SEO Targeted Or Adhoc?

If you’re reading this blog then I am going to make the assumption you have at least a passing interest in SEO. I will also make the assumption that you have read a few blogs along the way. If this is the case, you may at times become a little confused when you start to read conflicting, or at best, confusing posts on various topics.

There is always an argument surrounding topics such as duplicate content, linking strategies and whether ‘content is king’ or link building is more important. You may also read that everything is equal – and to an extent it is. These discussions often don’t really help – they are if you like generic arguments where one size fits most.

If you want to get serious about delivering a strong SEO program on your site then I suggest you forget those arguments and go back to square one. The bottom line is very simple. To outrank other sites for the same keyword – you need to outperform them.

Simple in words, not so simple in delivery. Link building is important, however, I often see sites with only a handful of links rank higher than a site with a thousand links. What is important is to stop the adhoc SEO approach and to start targeting your SEO.

Why are your competitors outranking you? What are they doing better than you? If you have more links than them then obviously linking is not the answer – so stop chasing them.

Is their content better than yours? Is their site older than yours? Do they have a dedicated server while you share a server? These are only a few of the questions you need to ask.

Adhoc SEO may be a good starting point. However, to really outrank your opponents you need to target areas that will have an impact. To say that everything is equal in SEO is not quite right. However, what is more important will be different for every site – that is why professional SEO services do so well – we know where to look and where to target those SEO strategies.
