Using Analytics To Tweak Your Pages
Analytics is a tool that every serious web site owner should be making use of. It becomes even more important once you start tweaking your pages. In fact, I would recommend using at least two different analytics tools – they are not all perfect and what one misses the other may catch.
Once you have a web site built to your satisfaction, drag out the analytics tools that you are comfortable with. Google Analytics is one useful tool and there are hundreds of tools on the market, some free, most paid. You may also have an on site tool that comes with your hosting package.
Every time you tweak one of your pages, sit back and watch to see what, if any, the effect is on your traffic and search positioning. Some tweaks will have a quicker effect than others, of course, and some tweaks may take months to take effect – these are the hardest to measure since you can’t stop everything to ‘wait and see’.
Tweaks such as rewriting your description meta tag, increasing keyword density and increasing the use of header tags could take effect fairly quickly. If you notice an increase in click-throughs after rewriting your description you can then repeat the process on other pages.
It’s through the use of analytics tools that you can assess what effect you are having and whether or not the process is worth repeating. This can be a real time saver – I have seen many web site owners who have had a ‘brainwave’ spend hours tweaking every page only to see little if any change in traffic. Save time and assess what you are doing as you do it. That is what analytics tools are for, measuring your success!
