Content Development – Forget SEO and Keywords, Deliver Your Message First
Content development can be a tricky business sometimes. You have to write in such way that your content engages the reader, maintains their interest, and has them coming back for more. At the same time, you want your content found. So your content has to include SEO elements like keywords and headings. It can be difficult to do both at the same time.
Of course, you cannot start by sprinkling keywords and headings. You can, however, start by forgetting SEO and simply writing to deliver the message. This allows for a natural writing style that addresses the points that need addressing – in other words, quality content.
Having completed writing your message, you can then sit down and edit it. It is during the editing process that you can include your SEO elements. Look at the title. Rewrite the title to include your keywords. Rewrite the first sentence to include and reinforce that keyword then, where appropriate, sprinkle keywords throughout your article.
Don’t overdo the keywords – there is no magic formula. Just place keywords where they can fit naturally in the text. Look for words like “it” – these can often be replaced by a keyword – for example, if widget is your keyword then “it is available in red and green” could be rewritten to say “the widget is available in red and green”. Try to ensure your keyword appears in the last paragraph as well.
It is during the editing process that you may identify areas that could be highlighted as section headings. Ensure the keyword is in the section heading and make use of the ‘H’ tags to provide the visual and search engine emphasis.
Obviously, part of your content development is not just the writing and optimizing of the content. Your basis for writing the message in the first place should have a keyword origin. Start with your keyword list – use that as a base for your content – however, write your content to deliver the message first and worry about the SEO elements during the editing phase.
