Is Micro Blogging Worth Considering?

With Twitter, probably the fastest growing medium online at present, it may be time to consider integrating it with a micro blogging program on your sites. Micro blogging sits somewhere between a standard blog post of 250 words or more and a Tweet of 140 characters. Some sites now include both full blog posts with micro blog posts with some success.

Micro blogging can be quite effective for commercial web sites that sell products. A short post of 100 words or so announcing a special price or new release creates a permanent record of that announcement on your blog – with a link back to product or product announcement on your site. That is then followed (often automatically with platforms such as WordPress having Twitter plugins) with a Tweet about the announcement.

I notice some sites are effectively gaining two Tweets for the one announcement – a Tweet from their blog and a Tweet from their website – this time with the direct link back to the product or product announcement page.

Is it worth considering for your site? Blogs serve many purposes so it will depend ultimately on why you have a blog. If your blog is to interact with customers (potential or actual) then micro blogs keeping them up-to-date with the latest news can be a help. It should be followed up by regular fuller posts that go into more detail.

From an SEO point of view, posting regularly, even micro blogging posts several times a day, keeps the search engines busy visiting your site. The ultimate question that needs to be asked every time you do something different is whether or not it will harm your site. This is the question you need to ask when it comes to micro blogging. If it isn’t going to do any harm, give it a try – it may even give your site a boost.
